Continuing his exploration of the emotional landscape of men in the twenty-first century, Anton Lambaart draws on the Quattrocento, the Italian Renaissance of the fifteenth century.
These intimate paintings are tronies: studies of character and expression rather than portraits of identifiable individuals. From dominance to remoteness and reserve, they connect historical representations of men with contemporary male vulnerability, asking how much of male response is learned, and how much is innate.
