These paintings are smaller works that I have completed over the past two years. I have found the smaller paintings have a different intensity than that of my large works.
They become like small portable icons, that I live with and pick up and take with me. They move with me as I move. The works have layer upon layer of painting to build a sculptural surface which I rework until an image forms that is a surprise/mystery/done. This takes time. Each work is complete in itself. I only recognise something that I do not know yet in the completion of the work.
The figures, birds, animals, flowers hold meaning for me, obvious symbols and markers that come up when making the work. The Diptych is new in my work and again the portable icon reference becomes loaded with two. There is a delight and surprise and satisfaction when I pair two works. I don’t know which works go together, again, I only recognise when they do.
I need the works to have beauty, to have meaning and there is always mystery. Sometimes the mystery is easy and sometimes the mystery is hard. Thank you for looking.
