Acrylic paintings by Judy Smith
In this, my first solo exhibition I have attempted to capture the essence of two of my favourite walking places – the Dunedin Town Belt and the land around Earnscleugh, Central Otago. The portraits are of family and friends.
Expressing the colours in painting, is very important to me, whether it is the luscious greens of the Town Belt or the amazing palette of colour Central Otago has to offer.
I have always loved the styles of the Impressionist painters, particularly the wonderful earthy landscapes of Cézanne. Other influences have been the New Zealand Regionalist painters of the 1930s and 40s such as Rata Lovell-Smith and William Sutton and the expressive portraits of Evelyn Page and Alan Pearson.
