Peter McLaren: Discarded Truths and Other Tales

2-30 August 2025

At the heart of much of my work lies the idea of 'Nostos' (a Greek word which loosely translates as ‘the ache of not being at home’). The human condition demands/yearns for a home – and this idea of home can be read as both a physical location as much as a symbolic or psychological space. My work attempts to explore and navigate between these two ideas.

The landscape features quite prominently within my practice, however, regardless of the subject matter or genre, the basic ideas behind the work remain largely unchanged. In general terms I will often try to suggest something of a sense of place rather than a realistic depiction of a particular scene. Light, with its suggestion of hope and renewal, and the way colour can act as an emotional signifier, are also crucial in my endeavours to express an ‘inner truth’.

Ultimately, my work is more of an attempt to capture a feeling, a fleeting moment, than a faithful rendition of a scene. I am drawn to imagery that speaks of things that are there, but not quite there. The suggestion of intangible notions such as absence and memory, loss and isolation are a constant theme for me and are often evident within my work.
