Scott Drummond: Shifted Light: Plein Air Paintings of the South Island & Taranaki

2-30 May 2026

Plein Air painting refers to the process of painting outdoors from direct observation of the landscape.

My practice is rooted in spontaneity and observing the scene as it exists in a fleeting moment.

This exhibition brings together two regions that have defined my personal and artistic history: the stark and sculptural landforms of the South Island and the changing moods of the Mountain, hills and coast of Taranaki.

In these works, I focus on value, form and the interplay between light and shadow. I aim to use direct, economical brushstrokes with looseness and abstraction, to prioritize atmosphere over meticulous detail.

Each piece is a race against the sun, an attempt to distill the essence of a scene before the shadows move on or the weather turns.

Working in oils, I seek to use my time at the easel to record a recognizable experience for the viewer, one that invites them to stand where I stood and feel an authentic and familiar sense of place.
